Simple Pleasures

My first roast chicken.

Seasoned with lemon juice, parsley, oregano and olive oil, served with roast potatoes.

Use an oven bag and voila! Fuss-free, lazy Sunday lunch.

I'm so proud. :)

Over here, we have gazpacho, also a first-try for me.

I've always been slightly grossed out by the thought of a chilled soup, one ingredient of which is raw garlic. Imagine. Ek.

Turned out really tasty, actually. Primary ingredients - tomatoes, cucumber, red capsicum, lemon juice and bread.

Serving it in cucumber shot glasses is a tip from Surreal Gourmet, the show with the guy who drives around in a toaster-shaped van.

There is just no better incentive to eat in.

Other than saving money. But of course.

Don't you just love those oven bags?? We use it for our Thanksgiving turkey every year.

Looks yummy!

ahh, thanksgiving is around the corner. the previous thanksgiving, my aunt FRIED the turkey instead of baking it. ;) yup, she has that humongous pot. lemme think what did she put in the oven instead...maybe the chicken or the duck. haha...it's so funny to see the dining table - having chicken and duck and turkey sitting side by side. :P

lotsachi - don't they have this dish in the US where they stuff the chicken in the duck, which then gets stuffed in the turkey? don't know how you'd handle cooking that though...

spot - always thought your blog was supposed to be white, can't see any other interface - even went to IE to check. Maybe it's a Mac thing.

The last time I used an oven bag, the chook just cooked without browning - not very tantalising...perhaps there's a technique I'm not aware of?

Platinum: You're right! It's called a TURDUCKEN. It's really scary. Google it and you'll find the recipe as well as pictures of how they put it together. They kinda put you off from wanting to eat the damn thing.

Spot: I've never used an oven bag. How do you use it? I roast a turkey every Christmas in my house and it turns out pretty decent and brown all over.

wandernut - You are are such a pig. I like you! If I weren't so hung up about anonymity, I'd suggest being eating kakis. :) Snowie, hor?

minty, wandernut, platinum: Oven bags rock! Had my reservations at first - it's PLASTIC, for the love of burning toxic fumes! Guess not all plastics are made equal. :)

Snowie read the instructions (cos I hate to) so I can't quite remember what it takes...apart from the strangeness of adding a tablespoon of flour into the bag first to prevent the bag from bursting. WTF??

The chook browned respectably in the sealed bag, but I cut it open in the last 15 minutes to turn and get the breast all crispy (switched to grill).

Btw, you can't get bags here. Got a box in Singapore from Cold Storage.

Percolator - I make, you buy from me lah, you super buyer of Cyberjaya. I can't make 60 boxes ok? :D

Asmadi - They're my best food pictures ever! Double proud! *sobs*

sue - Kesiannya. At least you can access the sites.

lotsachi - No need to season in advance. Season and pop straight into oven.

platinum - Oi...long time no hear from you lah. Vacation time now?

wandernut & platinum - TURDUCKEN? Ew. Avian orgy. Or triple dose of bird flu.

hmmm... first you're hot, and now you're a pig, wandernut... should i be jealous?? heh

yah... spot NEVER wants to read instructions! anyways, i'd imagine it's different from brand to brand, but essentially put a tbs flour in, shake it all about, lay into baking tray with mouth at the side, stuff prepared chook in (trying to avoid the flour that we conveniently pushed into a corner cos the box din say what to do with it), tie bag with tag they provide (we lost it at least 3 times!), tuck ends under (so it doesnt touch side of oven and melt or catch fire i guess), cut little holes at the top for hot air to escape (so it needn't do so in a loud bang) and that's it! i loooooove the fact that the oven/tray is such a breeze to clean after.

technically no need to cut bag open for chicken to brown, though i imagine the skin would not be as crisp if so. (plats, maybe you didnt cook long enough or chook not high enough in the oven?)

oh, and i think i would be very geli to eat a turkey that was capable of beranaking a duck that was capable of beranaking a chicken. :-S

snowie - i'm a great fan of instruction manuals too - otherwise how to know how to (let me get into my ex-consultant speak here) harness the full extent of its capabilities? :D... maybe freeing the bird in the last 15 mins was the trick to browning. Hint: The flour is to absorb all the fat that cooks out from the chook so it doesn't cause the oil to catch fire - see? got logical reasoning wan...

spot - no lah, just darn lazy... although your muhibbah entry tugged at heartstrings so felt compelled to add a few words after that (could be that i'm just plain bored)

LOL. avian orgy!? choi, tai ka lei si! :P

Anonymous said...

ooo.... flour absorbs oil!!! *ping* lightbulb of comprehension on. luckily i didnt chuck it out after shaking it all about!

Anonymous said...

my aunty never looked so delish! and you are really a good photographer!

Tho the cold soup thinggy really sounds gross... should I dare try?

Anonymous said...

B-b-b-b-ut... if put flour to absorb the oil so that it won't catch fire, what does one use to make gravy with?
(i usually use the oil /fat /whachamacallit and the meat juices to make gravy. super greasy but yummsss)

Snowie: No needs jearoushhh... i'm sure you're the one and only pig for the one and only cow. Me is a nut. Not even from the animal kingdom. Teehee...

Anonymous said...

Aiyo! Exposed! super buyer indeed! Btw, what did you do for gravy? Or did you not have gravy but chilli instead?

ahh... NOW only i get to see the pics. *wiping away drool* dunno y, makes me crave for nando's. ah well, if i can't have spot's 'yummy first roasted chicken', i guess nando's will have to do...
