Shards: Piece 2

The shiny logo on the latest addition to their growing garage preened, gleaming at her.

All the trappings of desire and power poured into fluid curves of leather and steel.

Just another gift from him.

A crumpled heap at the bottom of the backseat caught her eye. Ah. The little one’s sweater. She had had to turn the house inside out all morning, searching. All that tantrum and tears for nothing.

She took in the rich mahogany of the instrument panel. Shadowing the wake of her gaze as she lingered over the deep, smoky wood, a silent montage of images flickered to life in her heart.

Staring, she retreated into the welcome theatre of memory. Her mother’s house. Golden sunlight tinting the aged timber doorframe. The old water buffalo plodding down the field. And just the faintest scent of fresh earth. All so far away…yet always so near in her heart.

She blinked.

The letters of the logo demanded to be adored.

B… M… W

Yanti!

The logo slipped from focus.

Yantiiiiiiii!

Reflexively, she cringed. In a heartbeat, the rag in her hand was yanked away and snapped into her face.

YANTI!!!!

I suruh you pegi cuci kreta, you buat apa?

Diri situ termenung saja. Bodoh!

She hit her head on the car’s side mirror in her haste to retrieve the rag from the pail.

Cepat! CEPAT!

Manyak BODOH lah you.

It would be late evening by the time she heard the last of this. Then, he would be back and his wife would have to stop shouting and put on her pretty face instead.

Such lives these people lived.

She turned to the driver’s-side window.

With a wave of the soapy rag, she wiped away the tears from her reflection.

everyone - thankyou.

snowie - Aveo got no logo on the steering wheel lah. So you finally can bring yourself to say your car's name? I'd spell it as "ch'kop ch'kop". As you know, my horses are city-dwellers and gallop on cobblestones.
