Tis’ the season of Milo tins pregnant with buttery goodness, fizzy F&N Orange the colour of a gay goldfish in Vegas and yellow packets of chrysanthemum tea that always find a way to stay half full (and wasted) after the guests have left.
Let us not speak of the accompanying heatwave, traffic snarls, sweat-soaked everything, precocious brats, nosy cringe-machine relatives and the flash of red & gold paper that flags off a barrage of stickybeak questions before the cash is dispensed into your hot little hands.
Xing nien tau, indeed.
On to prettier things…
If I had to pick one generic icon of Chinese New Year, it would be the pineapple tart. How convenient then, to showcase one of Snowie’s latest baking projects.
These was made from scratch. Fresh pineapples met determined and eventually sore, knife wielding fingers. My contribution was to stir the jam (and complain) for almost two hours whilst secretly deriving a masochistic pleasure at the slow but amazing transformation of yellow-orange gloop into a deep, spicy amber.
Damn if they aren’t labour intensive. Tasty enough to reward the effort though.
But if you think that’s pretty…check this out.
Can you believe the kuasa-ness? If the intricacy doesn’t drop your jaw, how about this? – The exquisite attention and submissive domesticity behind this little marvel are illustrative of the characteristics that snared the baker a million dollar diamond engagement ring.
How many women these days are willing to whip up curry puffs from scratch upon her lord’s late night supper request? Certainly less than the number of men who still harbour me-caveman-you-cavewoman-lie down-me-pull-hair-go-cave fantasies.
One good thing about being close friends with very old money, is the opportunity for us common folk to partake of the remnant fruits of great seduction. One man can only eat so much, I guess.
Speaking of more common cavefolk…one morning, with one foot out the door (I leave for work earlier than Snowie)…
(Blah blah blah)
Because sometimes, I’m a caveman…deal with it, woman.
Bleh. I’m not your cavewoman.
And why not?
Because cavewomen don’t prepare bekal for their cavemen. Cavemen go out and hunt their own snack and eat it raw. That’s what makes them so objectionable.
A snack-sized container of tarts is plonked into my hands just before the door shuts in my face.
What a woman.

Oh my. I have never felt such a strong urge to pop something straight into my mouth before. I can eat dozens of these little guys. But do I have any? No. No, I do not.
Your food posts need to come with warning signs.
if like that... i think.. i.. am.. a.. man.
these look so delicious!!!!
now i have a craving for pineapple tarts!!
WOWZERS!!
Snowie so terror. Really put so much effort. Some of my pineapple tarts only had shortcrust nipples for decoration cos I only had ngam-ngam amount of pastry for my jam. Gosh, putting the whole thing together oredi so labour intensive. You tambah lattice deco some more. Salute Salute!
ok, i guess i should clarify - i only made the ones in the first pic with the traditional tic tac toe grid, not the amazing second pic with the "hairnet" grid... neither cavewoman nor gal with a million dollar diamond ring am i!
and wandernut, i only made 20 that time, of which only 10 were latticed... if i were making 80some like you, i think nipples would be the way forward! (must consider that for the 50 planned for this friday...)
oh, and spot, you KNOW i object to being called a woman... it sounds so...womanly
yum! hey, where do u have time to do all these? CNY holiday started already?
*wipes drool off my mouth*
Those tarts look too damn colour enhanced! So so sweet and sticky.... Juicy yet crumbly... Oh spank you both (since spot helped) for creating such devine looking tarts
Oh yes, clarifications required I think. The intricate one in the 2nd picture wasn't made by Snowie.
I don't think the 4-line tic tac toe pattern quite qualifies as "lattice". :)
The woman who came up with that little gem really did well with her cavewomanly domestic wiles. The diamond engagement ring was just one of several multi-million dollar gifts. That's what you get when you snag yourself men who come from very-old-money families.
Snowie - "I'm not a girl...not quite a woman". Maybe I should just call you Britney. ;)
HOI!!!
tcherk
MY mom makes amazing melt-in-your-mouth pinapple tarts. Though she did away with lattices years ago, and the tarts seem to be shrinking every year. Too much work, really.
AND OMG @ THE SUPER-LATTICES. The lines are SO STRAIGHT! Kuasa giler! She totally deserves million-dollar rings, definitely. Those are the hands of a Great Artist.
BTW Jay I eat more on your behalf ok? You keep your abs, I'll have my Xin Nian goodies.
Wah!
Your pineapple tart damn terror man!
OMG! I love pineapple tarts. They are my favourite among all the other cookies.
And yes, they look absolutely wonderful. I salute Snowie's baking skills. *applause*
Can I have some, pleeeeeeease?
Kong Hei Fatt Choy, Spot and Snowie!
My God. You bake pineapple tarts. You're a nyonya :)
