I Can't Believe..
1. I finally watched Chow Sing-Chi's Kung Fu Hustle (cos I was dying of boredom but I didn't want to get off the couch) and..really, really enjoyed it! Shockers. I usually can't stand the man's movies and his brand of humour.
It was a ingenious combination of styles - black&white-era kungfu movies, Pre-1950s Shanghai, MGM cartoons, Three Stooges slapstick, romantic drama, social commentary, The Matrix, American Westerns...mind-blowing, really. A tour of cinematic history.
Just goes to show. Book-cover-judging is so wrong, kids. Don't do it.
Was grateful for the BM sub-titles. Most helpful and essential to enjoyment to know that the landlady aunty's sonic scream is called Ngauman Singa, the world's ultimate kung-fu master is Dewa Awan Berapi, moves that are called Pukulan Buku Lima Buddha and 12 Tendangan Yang Tak Terhenti-henti. Oklah, I made the last one up. Can't remember what it was actually subtitled as...but close enough.
My favourite sequence is the one when the two blind assasins kill off 3 kung fu masters with their supercool umm...long horizontal chinese guitar...dunno what it's called lah (Snowie: bite me). Each drrrinngggggg of the strings unleashes cutting instruments of horrifying variety. Awesome.
2. I didn't keep Sunday's funnies section in the Star! AIEEEEEEEEE!!! It featured one of my all-time favourite Insanity Streak comic - a single panel: a mummy unicorn turns around and glares at her unicorn baby. She's got band-aids plastered all over her butt and is royally pissed-off with junior.
..."If I've told you once, I've told you a hundred times... STOP FOLLOWING MUMMY SO CLOSELY BEHIND!!!"
Oh, it's waaaaaaay better in picture. And in colour too!
And I forgot to cut it out...threw the paper away. Sob!

I saw the unicorn one!
But there was another better one that day... can't remember the name of the comic though.
You see a line of humans with wings on their backs (angels), lining up to get into heaven. Then there's a line of chickens next to them, but they have human arms sprouting out of their backs. Hilarious.
Bwahahhahaha! Farnie comic :)
Poor chickens, wat've they done to get arms pulak? :P
Nut - Yes yes!! I loved that one too. Took me a good few minutes though, before I got the joke. Brilliant :)
Geek - Since humans get wings in human heaven, chickens who go to chicken heaven get arms lah. :D
Plus, chicken equivalent of St. Peter was using a bone to write, while St. PEter was using a feather. HAHAHAHA.
I thought Kung Fu Hustle was gonna be one of those stupid slapstick shows too(watched parts of Shaolin Soccer) and was so pleasantly surprised that I watched it 4-5 times! I liked the part where all the orang jahat danced in suits, with flashbacks of them bashing people. So gaya.
By the way, don't you think that the ketua orang jahat looks a bit like that guy who acted as the sultan in Puteri Gunung Ledang? The same bloke who was Orked's hubby in Gubra?
Wasnt Kung Fu Hustle side-splittingly hilarious? I loved it too, especially the opening fight sequence!
paul
I still have the Sunday Star. You want the unicorn comic strip? I thot that was hilarious. If you want me to save it, faster-faster sms or email.
You just watched Kung-Fu Hustle??? I've watched it 3 times and I still break into grins which becomes giggles and then unavoidably laughter :) Good movie to watch when you just want aimless funnies.
81 - Wah, 4-5 times? I might watch it again (cos missed the first part) but that'll probably be it for me. :)
Missed the orang jahat musical sequence lah...only started watching at the point when the 3 kungfu masters "outed" themselves. But you're right, the ketua does look like the PGL Sultan (as I gather from the poster..didn't watch it, nor G&G).
Paul - Ah..now I really gotta watch it again. Must go borrow from my neighbourhood DVD rental - my brother.
boobs - faster fastered oredi. :)
Amelia J - I know, so ketinggalan zaman right? What to do, I'm (was) prejudiced against Stephen Chow. Gosh, the number of times I terbahak-bahaked...
Ooooh, I liked Chow Sing Chi's farnies...think he's quite creative.
Also think he's the HK version of Jim Carrey, whom most ppl hate, but I like...so farnee oso.
